January 2017 Tampa Bay fishing report. There is an abundance of species available during the winter if you’re interested in fishing Tampa Bay this time of year. One of our favorite species to target in the cold water months is the Spotted Seatrout or sometimes called the Speckled Seatrout. To be completely transparent with you here’s where we do it and here’s how we do it. Every single area in Tampa Bay has canals, channels, waterways, and rivers. We like to find areas that have long stretches of muddy bottoms in the 6 to 8 foot range of depth. The Bait presentation goes like this we use a live shrimp on a number one circle hook with 20 pounds leader approximately 30 inches in length. Here’s the trick we also use a cork to suspend the bait. Make sure your cork is high up on the Fishing line in the 5 to 6 foot range from the hook. This allows the Bait to get down close to the bottom where the Seatrout are moving slowly on top of the mud to stay warm. As cold and lethargic as they are they will still eat a bait if they run into it but it’s highly unlikely they will come off the bottom to grab a bait that’s 4 feet over there head.
Thank you for taking the time to read our blog. Check out our fishing reports for current up-to-date play by plays on what’s going on out there in the pristine waters of Tampa Bay.
